Did you know that there is a group of wheelchair basketball players that get together every Friday night at the Comox Recreation Centre to shoot some hoops? Yes, it's true! In November 2008 a small group of people participated in a wheelchair basketball camp in Nanaimo. Since then, they have been playing most Friday nights at the Comox Rec Centre.
In celebration of the efforts that have gone into establishing the space for this activity, the Comox Recreation Centre was recently recognized with a 2010 Outstanding Community Support Award at the BC Wheelchair Basketball Society's (BCWBS) annual awards night in Burnaby.
In a recent article in the Comox Valley Record (March 9, 2011), BCWBS states that, "it is the visionary 'can do' attitude of the staff at the Comox Rec Centre that has enabled wheelchair basketball to thrive in this area". WOW! congratulations, Comox Rec! This is truly an example of creating a welcoming and inclusive space for all. If you are
interested in Friday night wheelchair basketball, it is open to anyone who wishes to participate, regardless of whether you have a physical disability or not. For more information, please call the Rec Centre at 250.339.3355
